HVAC Improvements
Project
Heating, ventilating and air conditioning design and construction phase engineering services for developing and implementing HVAC system modifications to correct system operational deficiencies that were causing frequent freezing of hot water heating systems and uncomfortable space conditions. System improvements included heating and ventilating system noise reduction for the Auditorium system, cooling of central data closets, upgrades to terminal unit controls and system dampers, and reduction of building infiltration through air-handling systems.
M/E Role
Complete design of mechanical and electrical services and construction phase support services.
Challenges
Identifying the sources of excessive infiltration at classroom unit ventilator and fan coil installations that resulted in freezing of HVAC systems coils and unacceptable temperature conditions within classrooms. An innovative solution was implemented that corrected problems with the unit ventilator wall sleeves and intake air plenums without disruption of the existing unit ventilators that were built into classroom furnishings. The building's data closets were also equipped with a auxiliary, fan-based, economizer cooling systems to eliminate the need to operate the central chilled water system during winter months for proper cooling of data closets.
