NYS-DOT Hudson Valley
Traffic Management Center

Project

Design services provided through NYS Office of General Services.  The New York State Department of Transportation (DOT), the New York State Thruway Authority, and the New York State Police initiated the 73,000 SF facility to implement Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) technology and Emergency Services Systems (ESS) to increase safety and efficiency of major highways and parkways in the Hudson Valley area.

M/E Role

Design included electrical power, UPS and emergency power systems.  Fire protection design included electric motor driven fire pump, standpipe system and automatic fire suppression systems.  The suppression systems include wet-pipe sprinklers for most of the building and FM-200 systems for 21,000 SF of raised floor area, housing sensitive electronic equipment.  Award of Merit from the New York State Construction Magazine for one of the best projects of 2004.

Challenges

Design of this facility was particularly challenging, in that all systems needed to satisfy all of the New York State Agencies involved.  They had common goals but with different priorities.  After construction started, (Post 9/11), the New York State Emergency Management Office (SEMO) and Westchester County Emergency Services were added to the Facility which required significant redesign efforts.
