University of Rochester Medical Center - Wilmot Cancer Center

Project

Construction was recently completed for this 166,000 SF "world-class" comprehensive cancer center. This treatment center is designed to integrate the patient with the research therapies and associated supportive care. It will be designed to provide "research aimed at improving the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer; compassionate multi-disciplinary patient care; and education of current and future health care professionals."

M/E Role

As part of a major team, M/E has provided a risk assessment for fire, chemical, effluent, biological, magnetic fields, radiation and laser light exposures. Special design elements for labs, linear accelerator and other unique areas demanded close collaboration with Donald Blair Architects. Future needs, technology advances and expansion were also assessed and incorporated in the design.

Challenges

The integration of research and patient care required intense preplanning to mitigate risks and to assure patient comfort. Noise attenuation was addressed while meeting the high exhaust velocities demanded by the wind-wake analysis. Flexibility of the infrastructure will allow for the ongoing technological advances in equipment and research. The Pharmacy area was designed per the latest edition of Section 797 Pharmaceutical Compounding. This was a challenge due to the quantities of hazardous and non-hazardous compounding that will take place in this building.

The facility was designed to house various groups that are involved in both the research and treatment of cancer. The building contains the following program elements:
