Utility Infrastructure Expansion

Erie County Medical Center

The existing 4,800-ton chiller plant was expanded with two new 2,400-ton chillers, increasing total capacity to 7,200 tons. Primary and secondary pumps were replaced, converted to variable flow, and integrated with updated controls including demand flow optimization for chilled water, condenser pumps, and cooling towers.

The condenser water system was upgraded with four new variable-speed pumps and nine new variable-flow cooling towers, all coordinated with the chiller plant controls to maximize efficiency, redundancy, and operational flexibility. These upgrades are expected to reduce energy consumption by 3,200,000 kWh per year and peak demand by 1,090 kW, with NYSERDA incentives projected at $1.2 million. The project’s construction cost totaled approximately $6.75 million.
