Kleinhans Music Hall, designed by renowned Finnish architects Eliel and Eero Saarinen, is a National Historic Landmark and one of the world’s great concert halls. From the beginning, its HVAC system was carefully integrated into the architecture to deliver exceptional comfort while remaining virtually silent, meeting the client’s requirement that performers and audiences experience no perceptible air movement or noise during rehearsals and performances.
Our team was tasked with replacing the original 1940s air handling and exhaust systems while preserving the hall’s unique “breathing” design, where supply air flows from the ceiling through the auditorium into basement tunnels and out through the lattice brickwork. The project involved installing custom, site-built equipment, integrating with the existing steam system, adding advanced controls, and incorporating sound panels—all while reducing noise levels by 10 dBa. The result preserved Kleinhans’ world-class acoustics while delivering modern comfort and efficiency.
