At Upstate Medical University, an existing laboratory was renovated into a Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3) Tick Research and Testing Facility – one of the nation’s leading centers for tick-borne pathogen detection, with over 32,000 ticks tested across the U.S.
M/E Engineering provided MEP design services tailored for high-containment research, including specialized HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and medical gas systems. The HVAC system was designed for strict containment with once-through airflow, negative pressurization, and high-efficiency exhaust.
Additional safety features included hands-free plumbing fixtures, chemical containment systems, and clean-agent fire protection. Emergency power and sealed lighting systems were incorporated to maintain full containment integrity. The facility supports advanced research into tick-borne diseases and their impact on public health nationwide.
