In response to the growing demand for laboratory research space on campus, RIT reported record increases in research awards and national funding, prompting the need for expanded facilities. The new building features 18 flexible laboratories, each designed to function as either wet or dry lab space. Every lab is equipped with specialized fume hoods, water and electrical utilities, and bio-level safety measures. The center will support research in cognitive and neuroscience, artificial intelligence, and the health effects of e-cigarettes.
M/E Engineering designed the building’s mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection systems for flexibility to accommodate the wide range of research needs. Key system features include fume hood connections, high-pressure compressed air, adaptable electrical distribution, high-plume exhaust, high-purity water, low-impedance grounding, acid waste systems, and emergency power. Additionally, a central utility corridor on each floor provides convenient access to building systems, improving maintenance and future adaptability.
