Nichols School

New Student Commons & Dining Hall Expansion

MEP Design

Buffalo, NY

Project Highlights

As the need for expanded dining and gathering space became apparent, Nichols School constructed a new Student Commons that was completed in 2019. The new Student Commons, located between the Rand Dining Room in Mitchell Hall and the Flickinger Performing Arts Center serves as a gathering area for students and increases event space which allows for more community programming. The space also solved the need for more dining capacity allowing valuable instruction time to be reprogrammed.

M/E Role

M/E provided design services for all mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection systems including the design of a new heating/cooling mechanical system and LED lighting system for the existing Rand Dining Hall.  The Student Commons space was designed using energy efficient mechanical and lighting systems.  Care was taken in selecting equipment to provide a cohesive appearance between the existing Rand Dining Hall and new Student Commons, working closely with the Architect to conceal systems piping and ductwork in an inconspicuous manner.
