Old Fort Niagara

Visitor's Center Renovation

Youngstown, NY

Project Highlights

Old Fort Niagara, a National Historic Landmark and New York State Historic Site, is home to the oldest buildings in the Great Lakes region and welcomes more than 100,000 visitors each year. To support its mission of preservation and education, an existing storage facility was restored and adapted into a new Visitor Center featuring an orientation theatre/classroom, exhibit space, restrooms, and a museum shop.

M/E Role

M/E Engineering provided the design for the HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, lighting, and power engineering for this renovation. The centerpiece of the facility is the conserved 1812 Garrison Flag (24' x 28'), one of the oldest surviving U.S. flags. The display required a temperature and humidity-controlled enclosure, a cushioned anti-acidic surface for preservation, and specialized LED lighting that minimizes heat and UV radiation. Together, these systems protect a rare piece of American history while enhancing the visitor experience.
