Hobart & William Smith Colleges - Data Center
Relocation of the Campus' main Data Center from Williams Hall to Warren Hunting Smith Library to allow for future growth. The new Data Center serves as the Central Technology Facility for the College's computer processing equipment. The new data center is the focus of Hobart & William Smith Colleges student, faculty, and research data processing, local area network and wide area network, so the criticality of the data center cannot be overstated. The new data center, all of which utilizes raised floor for HVAC and computer cabling systems, occupies approximately 1,500 SF in the Basement of the Colleges' Library Building.
Complete design of the mechanical, electrical and plumbing/fire protection services. Design included a glycol-based cooling system consisting of roof-mounted dry coolers, and Computer Room Air Conditioning (CRAC) units in the data center, which maintain the data center space at 720F and 45% RH. The system as designed allows for future expansion and "N plus 1" redundancy. The electrical system included a diesel generator - backed 130kW uninterruptible power supply (UPS) with maintenance bypass and associated power distribution unit (PDU) and all cabling to the equipment racks. Emergency power back-up for entire mechanical cooling systems was also provided. A computer room ground grid, lighting, smoke detection, CCTV, and full monitoring of all mechanical and electrical equipment was provided, as well as a Novec 1230 fire protection system.
Timely completion of design documents to allow for Data Center to be constructed and occupied prior to the beginning of college classes in the fall of 2005. M/E Engineering was intimately involved throughout construction to help ensure timely project completion.
